Bill Thornton became Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry in March 2015.

Bill was previously the Assistant Deputy Minister for the Northern Development Division of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Transformation Secretariat.

He also served as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Forest Industry Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Bill began his 31-year career in the Ontario Public Service as a field forester with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry in Timmins. Since then, he has held numerous positions with both the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

Bill is a member of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, an Ontario Registered Professional Forester, a former Director on the Board of FPInnovations and a former Campaign Chair for the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie. He holds a Bachelor of Science in forestry from the University of New Brunswick and an MBA from Dalhousie University.
