Mines and Minerals Division:

New Conversion Demonstration Tool Available in CLAIMaps

We have updated and enhanced our CLAIMaps IV application in preparation for the implementation of the Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act (Bill 39). This new version launched recently and includes a new online Claim Conversion Demonstration and Claim Boundary Report (CBR) Tool. We encourage claim holders to experiment with this new resource to prepare for the conversion of their claim holdings.

The new tool provides demonstration mapping and forecasting of potential cell claims and boundary claims resulting from the conversion of claim holders’ existing ground or map staked mining claims (legacy claims) into one or more cell claims or boundary claims on the provincial grid  in the new Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS). The provincial grid is the prescribed digital representation of the Province of Ontario divided into unique cells each measuring 15 seconds latitude by 22.5 seconds longitude.

The tool can also provide a summary  report of the holder’s legacy claims, hectares, units and assessment work requirements as well as potential post-conversion cell claims, boundary claims, and assessment work requirements. Refer to instructions on how to use both tools.

What is a Claim Boundary Report?

A Claim Boundary Report (CBR) is a report that may be submitted by a claim holder to group claims so they will not merge at conversion.

Claim holders should review their mining claim holdings and plan ahead for conversion, including deciding whether to submit a CBR. While the CBR will be a useful tool for managing claims, it is important to understand the effects of submitting a CBR and how this may affect your claim block at conversion (i.e. submission of a CBR may result in the creation of multiple boundary claims at conversion that could potentially increase assessment work requirements). More information will be provided in the upcoming Claim Holders Conversion Guide.

Ministry staff can provide guidance on the conversion process as well as to how the tool can serve to prevent legacy claims from merging, but they cannot provide business advice. If a claim holder chooses to submit a CBR, this must be done between November 1 and November 30, 2017.

Please Note…

The online demonstration conversion tool only gives a forecast of potential conversion results based on a ‘snapshot’ in time. Claim locations or claim holdings may change before the conversion date and the results on the actual conversion date may differ.
