MAM Update - February 2016

Mines and Minerals Division:

How We Got Here

Our proposed legislation was developed following consultation with Ontario’s mineral exploration and development stakeholders and engagement with Aboriginal communities and groups that included:

  • A 2013/14 posting to the Environmental Registry (Environmental Bill of Rights - EBR)
  • Six industry workshops (Sudbury/Toronto/Vancouver).
  • Updated ER posting on “one-time conversion” in 2014/15
  • Presentations at OEGS, PDAC, Northwest and Northeast symposia in 2014 and 2015
  • Individual and combined discussion with OPA, PDAC, OMA
  • More than 50 one-on-one discussions with companies and claim holders
  • Regular updates to the Minister’s Mining Act Advisory Committee
  • Nineteen regional Aboriginal sessions over two years, including follow-ups targeting each group’s issues and concerns

MAM Glossary

(Introducing you to new terminology you will come across under MAM)

Conversion is the proposed process by which existing recorded mining claims (legacy claims) would be converted into new mining claims relating to cells on the provincial grid. Legacy claims would all be converted at the same time on a date set by the Minister. A demonstration version of the proposed provincial grid has been available for viewing on CLAIMaps since March 2015.

Proposed Legislation Introduced

Draft legislation (Bill 155) for Phase III of Mining Act Modernization was introduced in the Ontario Legislature in December. The Bill would make changes to the Mining Act to implement online claim registration and an integrated land administration system. MNDM proposes to have Phase III fully launched in 2017. The Bill received first reading and can be found on the Legislative Assembly website, under Current Bills.
