Mines and Minerals Division:

IMPORTANT REMINDER

MLAS Service Interruption March 15-April 9, 2018

Enroll in MLAS Now!

We are reminding our mineral exploration proponents that they should prepare for the temporary unavailability of Ontario’s new 24/7 electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS) between March 15 and April 9.

We are in the process of finalizing the Stage 2 launch preparations which includes ensuring all data transfers, security and performance testing are completed prior to the April 10 launch. As a result, MLAS will be offline as of 12:01 a.m. on March 15 to complete those preparations.

The Ministry is also finalizing spatial data to prepare for the conversion of all existing active mining claims (legacy claims) to cell claims and boundary claims on the provincial grid. This process involves converting some 33,000 legacy claims into roughly 250,000 cell claims and boundary claims and setting up the new claim abstracts.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!

We encourage you to complete your MLAS enrolment as soon as possible before March 15. If you are an active claim holder in Ontario or hold a valid prospector’s licence, you should have received an enrolment package to guide you on how to register to create your client profile. If you miss the March 15 window, you will still be able to register online anytime after Stage 2 of MLAS launches on April 10.

If you haven’t received your enrolment package, you need to contact us as soon as possible at the number below. Newcomers to exploring in Ontario can request an enrolment package now but will only be able to register in MLAS beginning April 10.

Conversion (MLAS Stage 2)

Stage 1 of MLAS was launched February 7. At conversion on April 10, Stage 2 will launch at which time all legacy claims will be transformed into cell claims or boundary claims, online mining claim registration will go into effect and MLAS will be fully launched.  This will make mining lands management much more efficient and cost effective than the current paper-based system and Ontario’s mining lands data will become the most accurate it has ever been.

Being Ready Is Your Responsibility

It is your responsibility as a claim holder to remain informed and engaged in the process in order to manage your claims and interests, know your role and obligations, and to maximize the opportunities and benefits of the new system. It is your responsibility to understand conversion and the impacts of changes contained in the legislation.
