Surficial Geochemistry

Miscellaneous Release—Data 321
McFaulds Lake (“Ring of Fire”) Area Stream Sediment Geochemistry; by R.D. Dyer and L.A. Handley. This digital data release consists of stream sediment geochemical data from 146 samples obtained from within the Attawapiskat and Muketei rivers in the McFaulds Lake (“Ring of Fire”) area of northern Ontario. These results are supplemental to previously released indicator mineral data reported in Open File Report (OFR) 6108 and MRD 119, published in 2003. Geochemical analysis on the fine fraction (-80 mesh; 180 µm) was performed on a separate sample aliquot from the bulk samples that were processed for indicator minerals as described and reported in OFR 6108 and MRD 119. The samples were sieved to retain the -80 mesh size fraction, which underwent aqua regia digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP–OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) for a suite of 51 metals. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) was also performed and reported here. Quality control data, consisting of the results from the analysis of duplicate pairs and certified reference materials, are included in this release as well. The data are available as 4 Microsoft® Excel® 97–2003 (.xls) files, and documentation as 2 portable document format (.pdf) files, on 1 CD. $20.00.

Errata

We regret any inconvenience these errors may have caused.

  • Preliminary Map P.3770, Quaternary Geology, Burntbush Area, Northeastern Ontario (released on April 16, 2013), was published with errors in the geological legend. The box showing the colour for Unit 8 was missing; additionally, the colours for Unit 7 and Unit 6 were matched to the wrong description in the legend. The remainder of the legend is correct.

These errors have been fixed and a replacement map is now available for those clients who purchased Preliminary Map P.3770 with the incorrect legend. Please contact Publication Sales and a replacement map will be sent to you free of charge. Alternatively, you may download the corrected version of Preliminary Map P.3770 files from our GeologyOntario Web site.

  • In Open File Report 6297, Results of Regional Till Sampling in the Detour Lake and Burntbush Area, Northern Ontario (released April 14, 2015), the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) co-ordinates displayed on Figure 2 (in the back pocket) have incorrect “N” (northing) and “E” (easting) labels. In the top right corner of the figure, the co-ordinates should be indicated as 612185 mE and 5570955 mN; in the bottom left, 510615 mE and 5410990 mN.

These errors have been fixed and a replacement report is now available. You may download the corrected version of Open File Report 6297 from our GeologyOntario Web site.

  • In Miscellaneous Release—Data 283–Revised, Ambient Groundwater Geochemistry Data for Southern Ontario, 2007–2014 (released on January 13, 2015), the following errors have been noted in the Microsoft® Excel® 2010 file “MRD_283_data(revised_2014).xlsx”.

    • An erroneous concentration for bromide (Br) for sample 08-AG-178; the value 26.72 mg/L has been replaced with the correct value of 0.15 mg/L.
    • Incorrect sums of total dissolved solids (TDS) for 60 samples; sample numbers are listed below.
    • Degrees of Latitude and Longitude were reversed for 60 samples (the UTM co-ordinates were not affected); sample numbers are listed below.

The sample numbers (Sample) in file “MRD_283_data(revised_2014).xlsx”, corrected for Latitude, Longitude and TDS sum, are listed below.

Announcement

Mineral Deposit Inventory

The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines announces the availability of an updated version of the Mineral Deposit Inventory (MDI). This database is an inventory of mineral deposits in the province of Ontario and supersedes previous MDI releases. Originally compiled in the early 1970s by the Resident Geologist Program (RGP), the database is continually being reviewed and updated by RGP staff. There are 58 new records, 829 updated records and a total of 19 253 records in the 2015 MDI database.

The Mineral Deposit Inventory will no longer be released and sold as a separate publication; instead, it is available as a direct download (similar to, as examples, “Drill Hole Records” and “Abandoned, Inactive Mine Sites and Mine Hazards”) from GeologyOntario.

Each MDI record provides all or some of the following information: deposit name(s), location, status (e.g., occurrence, prospect, producer, past producer), commodities, character/classification, geological structure, lithology, minerals and mineral alteration, geochemistry, exploration history, and production and reserve data where available. Also included are notes on deposit visits and references to additional publications related to the deposit.

The compressed (.zip) download file provides MDI data in 2 formats: 1) a relational database, and 2) MDI provincial coverage in a geospatial GIS (ESRI® shape file) format. The complete MDI relational database is provided in Microsoft® Access® 2010 (.mdb) format. For the geospatial data, basic mineral deposit information (MDI number, commodities and property status) is provided. Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate system using Geodetic Reference System 1980 (GRS80).
