Discover Abitibi

The Discover Abitibi Initiative is a regional, cluster economic development project providing geoscientific investigations of the Western Abitibi Greenstone Belt in Ontario. The project has brought together funding partners FedNor, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and the private sector to complete projects, which will further stimulate exploration activity and mining in this prolific belt. To support this successful endeavor, user stakeholders have provided the project ideas. The technical expertise to evaluate the projects has been provided by volunteers on the technical and management committees. For further information regarding this initiative, contact the Timmins Economic Development Corporation by email at

Geological Mapping and Compilation of the Burntbush–Normétal Volcanic Belt, Abitibi Greenstone Belt, Ontario–Quebec; by T.J. Barrett, J.A. Ayer, J.C. Ordóñez-Calderón and M.A. Hamilton. This release presents the results of a collaborative project between the Discover Abitibi Initiative and the Ontario Geological Survey to improve the geological database and understanding of the Burntbush (Ontario) to Normétal (Quebec) portion of the Abitibi greenstone belt. A report outlines the project methods and summarizes the results of the project: to define the ages and compositions of the major stratigraphic and intrusive units of the Burntbush–Normétal volcanic belt, to determine their structural setting, and to determine the relation of massive sulphide and local gold mineralization to these units. The following information is provided: field data collected from geological mapping the Burntbush and Normétal areas with a detailed structural analysis of the Burntbush area; 500 whole-rock lithogeochemical analyses, 11 U/Pb zircon ages, and 15 neodymium-hafnium isotope analyses on whole rock (among which 10 samples were chosen for hafnium isotope analyses on zircon fractions) from along the length of the belt; 25 sulphur isotope analyses from the Normétal area; and petrographic examination of 50 samples. In addition, 1077 field photographs and 204 thin-section photomicrographs of samples from the Burntbush and the Normétal areas; and 382 core photos from the Normétal area are included. Location data are provided in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection and grid system, Zone 17, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83). Report files are provided in portable document format (.pdf), analytical results as Microsoft® Excel® 2003 or 2010 (.xls or .xlsx) and photographs as .jpg format files. The files are provided on 1 DVD. $25.00.

Miscellaneous Release—Data 300
The Montclerg Gold Deposit, Abitibi Greenstone Belt, East Timmins Region, Ontario: Stratigraphy, Lithogeochemistry, Mineralization and Nature of Vein Fluids; by T.J. Barrett, G.C. Wilson, M.A. Hamilton, D.J. Kontak, M. Burns, J.A. Ayer and G.M. Stott. This release provides the results of a study, undertaken as part of the Discover Abitibi Initiative, on the Montclerg gold deposit located east-northeast of Timmins. A report (portable document format (.pdf) file) presents the results of a detailed lithogeochemical and petrographic study of the host rocks of the Montclerg Zone, and new U/Pb zircon ages, as well as stable isotopic (oxygen, sulphur, carbon) data, electron microprobe data and fluid inclusion data on the veins minerals. Data were also obtained for comparative purposes from the Canamax Zone (400 to 500 m to the south) and the Clavos Mine (9 km to the west-southwest). Supporting data tables are provided as Microsoft® Excel® 2010 (.xlsx) format files. Location data are provided in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection and grid system, Zone 17, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83). The files are provided on 1 CD. $20.00.
