September 1, 2017 Target Deadline for Georeferencing Mining Claims

If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to think about georeferencing mining claims recorded prior to November 1, 2012. As of that date, it has been required that all new mining claims be georeferenced using GPS technology that is in accordance with Ontario’s “Georeferencing Standards for Unpatented Mining Claims” guidelines.

Ontario Legislature Moving Forward With Mining Act Modernization Bill

Today at Queen’s Park, Ontario introduced the Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act, a bill to amend and modernize both the Mining Act under the auspices of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aggregate Resources Act.

With respect to modernizing the Mining Act, the new bill replaces legislative proposals contained in Bill 155, which was pre-empted by prorogation of the Ontario Legislature in September.

Have You Georeferenced Your Mining Claims?

As part of the ongoing Mining Act Modernization process, Ontario is proposing to convert existing mining claims to new, cell-based claims, implement a province-wide system of online mining claim registration, and launch a new electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS). In advance of the proposed conversion process, we have been encouraging you to georeference your claims.

Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS)

Ontario is proposing to move away from ground staked mining claims and to implement province-wide online mining claim registration and a new electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS), as part of the ongoing roll-out of the Mining Act Modernization (MAM) process. The proposed changes to assessment work described in this bulletin depend on the enactment of technical amendments to the Mining Act and then developing a new assessment work regulation.
