At the turn of the 20th century, many people thought of Northern Ontario as an isolated frontier, valuable for its natural resources. At that time, the area's resources were providing about 25 percent of Ontario's revenues.
The current Ministry of Northern Development and Mines website has been redesigned and will launch shortly.
The redesign focuses on bringing commonly accessed information to the forefront by simplifying the content and navigation of the website. The new site will be in full compliance with government standards such as accessibility, translation, and visual identity requirements.
The new design will allow for the rapid addition of content. New content will continue to be added following the launch.
Please note that existing bookmarks to Ministry web pages may need to be updated within your web browser following the launch.
The Mines and Minerals Division works to support responsible land use management and mineral resource development by administration of the Mining Act, providing public geoscience information and client services.
A treasure trove of minerals lies buried beneath Northern Ontario' stretch of the Canadian Shield and within the younger sedimentary rocks that cover much of Southern Ontario.
Ontario's known mineral deposits are rich-nickel, gold, silver, platinum, diamonds-and much of the Far North has yet to be explored.
