Geoscience Assessment Office
Who We Are
The Geoscience Assessment Office, is a unit within the Mining Lands Section, the mandate of which is to
- assess geoscientific information submitted for assessment work credit to ensure compliance with the Mining Act and Assessment Work Regulation
- ensure that the geoscience data are made available to explorationists to support them in their intense and often costly search for new mineral resources
- provide information and expertise to clients regarding the proper filing of assessment work and technical data
Our Clients
- any person or company interested in performing exploration work to keep their mining claims in good standing
- claim holders
- industry contractors and land managers who file carry out exploration work or file work on behalf of claim holders
What We Provide
- information bulletins (see below) and advice on what exploration work qualifies for assessment work credits and how to file the form and report for assessment work credit
- an up-to-date website on any changes to the Assessment Work Regulation
- the checklists for the information required in technical reports
- the required forms to file your assessment work and the forms required to distribute any credit you may have in reserve
The approved exploration data are then made available to the public, in the John B. Gammon Geoscience Library and the Resident Geologist’s Office for the area where the work was performed.
What Is Assessment Work?
To keep the rights to explore and develop staked mining lands in Ontario, clients must do exploration work on the lands and send a record of their work to our ministry. Our Geoscience Assessment Office makes sure that the work obeys the Mining Act and regulations by asking for revisions, if necessary, and by checking the costs of the work. Our staff tell claim holders what the approved value of the assessment work is. We then send the approved work to the Resident Geologist Offices and the Assessment File Library.
