Mine Rehabilitation

The Rehabilitation, Compliance and Inspection Office within the Mines Group ensures that the mine sites in Ontario are closed out in a manner consistent with sound environmental and public safety closure designs and to limit accrual of public risk and liability.

Staff:

• Audit closure plans as required under Part VII of the Mining Act.
• Monitor and inspect rehabilitation works.
• Ensure that operating mines are rehabilitated by mine owners in accordance to the legislative standards of the province.
• Investigates occurances of non-compliance of the Mining Act.
• Develop regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines and standards in order to administer Part VII of the Mining Act in a fair and consistent manner.

This office is also responsible for abandoned mines and mine hazards within Ontario and is also responsible for monitoring and cataloguing all abandoned and inactive mine sites and mine hazards within the province. This is achieved through the use of various abandoned mines databases and reports.
