This digital compilation of the bedrock geology of Ontario is a re-release of the CAD files released in 1993 and of the paper series of 1:1 000 000 scale maps first released in 1991. The Bedrock Geology Data Set is a seamless geological map of the province that shows the distribution of bedrock units underlying Ontario. It illustrates geological rock types, major faults, granulite areas, iron formations and dike swarms. Base information, such as latitude and longitude lines, water bodies and townships, is included. Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate systems in ESRI shape file format. In addition, the original AutoCAD v.12, DXF files have been provided on the same CD-ROM. Legends, explanatory notes, metadata and details of the ESRI shape file format and AutoCAD data sets are provided.

 Available on 1 CD-ROM. $20.00

Data Set 11 - Tectonic Assemblages of Ontario, 1993

The Tectonic Geology Data Set is a digital interpretation of the Tectonic Geology of the Province of Ontario, It illustrates this by 1) grouping volcanic and sedimentary rock units into tectonic assemblages in Precambrain terrains and depositional sequences in the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basins; and 2) interpreting the ranges of emplacement ages of all major intrusions and grouping some plutons into suites.   Among a range of tectonically significant features, the map also displays major folds, faults, stratigraphic younging directions, interpreted centres of volcanism and locations of U/Pb age determinations, which are numbered and cross-referenced to a table of ages.   This map represents the first attempt internationally to subdivide Archean rock units into Tectonic assemblages, and the first attempt in Ontario to subdivide Paleozic and Mesozoic rock units into depositional sequences.

The purpose of this map is to portray the distribution of magmatism and sedimentation in time and space in the rock record of Ontario.  The intended user is a geologist with an academic or applied mineral exploration interest in the components of the bedrock of Ontario that forms the basis of its geochronometric and tectonic record.

Data is unedited and provided in Lambert Conformal Conic map projection NAD27.  Available as AutoCAD v.12  DWG and MicroStation DGN files on one CD $20.00

Data Set 12 - Townships and Areas of Ontario, 1993

View Metadata

A Geographic Township is a polygon feature that indicates the fundamental land subdivision fabric of the Province. Each Geographic Township area may or may not be the same as the jurisdictional area of the township.  The location of township lines on the Ontario Base Maps (OBM) were determined by using a combination of both survey information, i.e., retracements, original township plans, surveys notes, etc.; and OBM physical features such as roads, trails, fence lines, and water bodies. In some areas where there were almost no OBM physical features available, aerial photographs may have been used to help determine boundaries. Unorganized areas are derived from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Base Map Areas.   For administrative and spacial reference purposes only, these map data are unedited and are not for survey purposes.

Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate systems in ESRI shape file format. Available on 1 CD-ROM. $20.00

Data Set 13 - The Ontario Drill Hole Database
(Re-released December 2005)

View Metadata

The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has released an updated version of the Ontario Drill Hole Database. Drill hole data are compiled from assessment files on a regular basis; the Drill Hole Database is continuously updated and released periodically on CD-ROM. This release includes drill holes completed to April 2005, adding more than 13 000 new drill holes since the last release (ERLIS Data Set 13, November 1999). A number of data and location errors have also been corrected. This release supersedes all previous releases.

The Drill Hole Database contains information for over 126 000 percussion, overburden, sonic and diamond drill holes. Data include location, company name, company hole number, hole orientation, hole depth, and overburden depth if applicable. The presence of assay results within cutoff values for gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel and platinum group elements is noted. Source assessment file numbers are captured for cross referencing with the assessment file database (AFRI).

Data are provided in two formats in this release: 1) a relational database and 2) seamless provincial geospatial coverage in GIS format. The relational database is provided in Microsoft Access 97 format. Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate systems in ESRI shape file format. ArcExplorerT software has been provided to view and query the shape files.

Available on 1 CD-ROM. $20.00.

This digital compilation of the Quaternary geology of Ontario is a re-release of the CAD files released in May 1997 and the paper series of 1:1 000 000 scale maps first released in 1992. The Quaternary Geology Data Set illustrates the general distribution of the various types of Quaternary sediments and the major landforms associated with them. Tills, glaciofluvial, glaciolacustrine, glaciomarine, fluvial, lacustrine and organic deposits are represented by 30 distinct geological units illustrating the Quaternary stratigraphy of Ontario. Also shown are landform deposits such as drumlins, moraines, eskers, sand dunes, and glacial-related escarpments. Base information, such as latitude and longitude lines, water bodies and townships, is included. Geospatial data are provided in North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) geographic co-ordinate systems in ESRI shape file format.. ArcExplorer has been provided to view and query the ArcView data. In addition, the original AutoCAD v.12 DXF and MicroStation DGN files have been provided on the same CD-ROM. Legends, explanatory notes, metadata and details of the ESRI shape file format and CAD data sets are provided in Microsoft ® Word 97 and RTF file formats.

The data is available on one CD-ROM. $20.00

Data Set 22 - Geology of Ontario Base Maps, 1999

This topographic base map complement the previously released bedrock, tectonic and Quaternary digital Geology of Ontario themes. Compiled at a scale of 1:1 000 000 in 1993, the digital file contains items such as hydrology, road and railroad networks, town and city locations, and political boundaries.

Data is unedited and provided in Lambert Conformal Conic map projection NAD27. Available as AutoCAD v.12 DXF and DWG and MicroStation DGN files on one CD $20.00
