Enhancements to the Aggregate Resources Inventory Paper (ARIP) Series

The Aggregate Resources Inventory Program of the Ontario Geological Survey provides basic geological information on potential mineral aggregate resource areas, which can be used, for example, in land use planning strategies. Since its introduction in 1979, the program’s Aggregate Resources Inventory Paper (ARIP) series has identified the nature and extent of aggregate resources throughout the province. Maps accompanying the reports outline areas of potential for aggregate extraction. Initially published as hard-copy reports, the ARIP series has also been available digitally, over the past few years, in portable document format (PDF) from GeologyOntario.

We are now able to offer enhancements to the series. Tables in the report that provide details on aspects of the aggregate potential of an area (such as total sand and gravel resources, and total bedrock resources) are now available in spreadsheet format (e.g., Microsoft®Excel®). Similarly, ESRI® ArcGIS® files of the maps accompanying the reports are also available. These ArcGIS® files contain additional information on the aggregate resources of an area (such as deposit type and texture data for the sand and gravel resources map) that are not on the hard-copy maps.

The enhanced information and map files are available for download from GeologyOntario in a compressed (.zip) file, in the same location as the ARIP. The Aggregate Resources Inventory Map (ARIM) designation will not be continued for the digital map files. In future, these map files will be found only with the associated ARIP and will not be published as a separate series.

These enhancements to the ARIP series are effective June 2, 2009. Comments on these changes may be directed to the Senior Manager, Sedimentary Geoscience Section, Ontario Geological Survey.

Errata

In Open File Report 6226, Summary of Field Work and Other Activities 2008 (released December 8, 2008), the following errors were noted in Article 15, Characterization of Plutonic Suites in Cavendish Township, Grenville Province, by In-Situ Geophysical Measurements and Geochemistry in Table 15.1.  Some of the values for 2 intrusive unit sampling sites—numbers 3 and 4, Galloway pluton and Junction pluton, respectively—were reversed.  The values for the specific gravity; the magnetic susceptibility; and the average and median weight % K, ppm U and ppm Th were reversed.  The sampling site number, unit name and UTM location, rock type and age for each of site 3 (Galloway pluton) and site 4 (Junction pluton) are correct and remain unchanged.

These errors have been corrected and a replacement page is available.  If you would like a copy of this page, please contact Publication Sales and it will be sent to you free of charge.  The corrected article is also available on the Mines and Minerals Division web site at http://www.MNDMF.gov.on.ca/mines/ogs/ims/pub/sfw/default_e.asp.

On Preliminary Map P.3607, Precambrian Geology of the Winisk Lake Area, Northwestern Ontario, released April 7, 2009, the geochronological age reported for sample site 4 in the northeast part of the map face should read “<2719 ± 2 Ma” not “2919 ± 2 Ma”. The age is correctly reported, however, in Table 2.

We regret any inconvenience these errors may have caused.
