Summer Work Experience for Geoscience Students

Qualifications

• continuing, full-time student in the geosciences or related studies (1st year to 4th year; prospective or full-time graduate student).
• Team oriented with good communication skills
• Must be willing and able to work outdoors for extended periods and have a valid driver’s license

• Some knowledge of and/or experience with applicable computer software and hardware
• basic St. John's Ambulance (with CPR)  first aid training certificate (or equivalent) in good standing (OGS will reimburse you for the cost of the training).

What positions can I apply for?

Senior Assistant

You’re a 4th year or graduate student in an earth science program and have at least two summers of field experience. Your duties include:

• co-lead the field crew and share responsibility with the Project Leader
• geologic mapping, data & sample collection, leadership of the crew, data entry, develop daily work plans, crew and/or camp management, work closely with project geologist, navigation
• independently collect geological information in the field

Junior Assistant

You’re an undergraduate student in an earth science program in university or college with or without field experience. Your duties would include:

• assisting with data collection, navigating in the field, sampling and sample preparation; operating vehicles (trucks, ATVs) and/or water craft; data entry
• cooking and camp maintenance.

What you need to know before you apply

How long will the job last?

The average field season is 12 to 14 weeks beginning in mid-May until the end of August.  About a week in May is devoted to health and safety training that includes ATV and bush road driver’s training, aircraft safety, wilderness first aid training for remote field crews, etc.

Where will I be living?

Living and working conditions vary widely depending on the location of the project and the work involved. You might live in cottages, motels or tents for all or part of the field season.   A few crews operate in remote areas and use boats, canoes, helicopters and float planes to get around.

What work will I be doing?

You would: collect and prepare rock, sediment or water samples in the field; plot digital data; take field notes and learn the fundamentals of geologic field operations.

How many people will be in my field crew?

Field crews consist of 1 or 2 professional geoscientists or “Project Leaders” and from 1 to 6 students.  The number of students on a field crew varies depending on the type of project.  

Can I do research for a thesis in conjunction with an OGS project?

Yes. If you want to discuss the possibility of doing thesis research in conjunction with a specific OGS project then please indicate this on your application.

What’s the deadline for applications?

March 31, 2009.  After the deadline date, you have less chance of being accepted. So send in your application as soon as possible
