General Description
  • OGS talk presented at the Boreal Prospectors’ Symposium, February 27-28, 2007. Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada

  • The 2005 Ontario Budget announced $15M over three years for geological mapping in the Far North as part of the Northern Prosperity Plan entitled the Far North Geological Mapping Initiative.

  • The Far North Geological Mapping Initiative needs to address several Government expectations:
    - the Government will invest primarily in Far North geoscience mapping activities and related technical support activities required to deliver the geoscience activities;
    - aboriginal communication, consultation, and relationship-building with those communities in, and in proximity to, the anticipated geoscience activities;
    - OGS will publish and be the steward of the geoscience results to ensure the results are available for all to access and use to make investment, planning, or policy decisions.

Geographic Survey Areas
  • The general Far North region (north of 51 latitude) includes the Ministry of Natural Resource’s Northern Boreal Initiative (NBI) area.  Areas where geoscience studies and mapping will be conducted will be better defined following client input.

Data Collection and Analysis
  • Airborne geophysical surveys/remote sensed imagery
  • Create new compilation maps based on analysis of existing and new geoscience data.
  • New “feet-on-the-ground” geological bedrock and Quaternary mapping.
  • Geochemical surveys and surficial mapping.
  • Purchase proprietary geoscience data from the private sector.
Data Delivery and Marketing
  • Publications and Product Production.
  • Marketing of Products.
Aboriginal Engagement Approach
  • Aboriginal community engagement will include: consulting and building relationships with those aboriginal people of the Far North whose communities and traditional areas may lie within the geoscience study areas.
