Northern Development Councils (NDCs) provide input on provincial policies and programs. They help identify how these policies and programs may impact Northern Ontario and they develop strategies for the government’s consideration on how to respond to unique Northern needs and circumstances.
There are three NDCs: one for the Northwest, Northeast, and the Far North.
Each NDC meets up to six times a year and together with all NDCs once or twice a year.
The NDCs will play an important role in priorities such as creating opportunities for youth, building stronger relations with First Nations and building an innovative northern economy. NDCs give northerners a new and effective way to share ideas and to work together for the North’s future. By working together we can bring prosperity to this region and a quality of life that is second to none.
NDCs contribute to a stronger democracy by providing a direct link from northern communities to the Minister of Northern Development and Mines. NDCs bring a northern perspective to provincial policies and initiatives. They examine issues affecting Northern Ontario and they bring forward solutions that reflect opportunities and needs in northern communities.
Individuals appointed to the councils represent a broad cross-section of people across the North. These individuals volunteered or were nominated by others.
The members of our NDCs participate as individuals, not representatives of specific organizations. They bring insight and experience from rural and urban communities, First Nations, Francophone and youth groups, resource sectors and emerging sectors, health and education institutions, economic development organizations, municipal associations and social organizations.
Yes. For some topics, NDCs will work with northerners to develop their recommendations to the Minister. For example, in examining the issue of youth outmigration, NDC members worked with northern youth to develop proposed objectives and strategies. On other topics, NDCs may provide direct advice to the Minister, to MNDM or to other partner ministries.
