New ‘Home’ For Atikokan Youth

McGuinty Government Supports New Youth Centre

Ontario is helping build a new recreational centre in Atikokan that will also provide local youth with employment and skills training information.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing $51,650 to Atikokan Youth Initiatives for the construction of a new youth centre in the community’s downtown. The 1,800-square foot fully accessible building will welcome 13 to 18 year olds and will include a canteen, games and furnishings, as well as information about jobs and skills development opportunities.
Up to 11 construction jobs will be created through this project and a new coordinator position will be established.

QUICK FACTS
- Atikokan Youth Initiatives will demolish an existing structure on Main Street. It is in poor condition and will be replaced by the new youth centre.
- The NOHFC funding is provided under its Infrastructure and Community Development Program which helps northern communities improve infrastructure and develop partnerships that create jobs and improve economic prospects in the North.
