Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation Explores Granite Manufacturing

McGuinty Government Supports First Nation Economic Development Efforts
NEWS
The Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation is exploring opportunities to stimulate local economic and community development by expanding into the granite manufacturing sector.
Through the help of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) this First Nation will study the potential for a new gang saw granite fabrication plant. These plants process natural granite supply blocks from quarries into saleable commodities primarily for the building construction industry.
This feasibility study will be completed by September 2009. Benefits of a plant would include:
- Creating up to 50 new jobs
- Encourage off-reserve members to return to the community for work opportunities and
- Providing a general economic boost to the area.

- Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation, formerly known as Rat Portage First Nation, is located on the shores of the Lake of the Woods. It is a prime destination for vacationers which offers fishing, camping, hunting and eco-tours.
