Veterinary Assistance Program

In Northern Ontario, livestock producers are located across a big geographic area. Access to “large animal” veterinarians can be difficult because of the distances to farms in sparsely populated areas that veterinarians must travel and of the costs involved.

The Veterinary Assistance Program helps Northern Ontario’s livestock industry by ensuring that producers have access to "large animal" veterinary services.

We provide grants to participating veterinarians to help them with the cost of driving to farms, which keeps this cost from being passed on to the producer.

The program also provides financial help to veterinarians to:

  • attend continuing education courses
  • hire temporary replacements while on short-term leave

Eligible program area means all areas in the Province of Ontario north of and including the County of Renfrew, the County of Haliburton, the Township of Addington Highlands, the Township of Carlow/Mayo, the Township of Limerick, the Township of Wollaston, the Township of Georgian Bluffs, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, and the District Municipality of Muskoka.

Eligible livestock include:

  • horses
  • cattle
  • sheep
  • goats
  • swine
  • rabbits
  • poultry
  • bison
  • deer
  • animals maintained in captivity for producing fur, velvet or meat.
