Northern Ontario Winter Roads Maps

Program Description

Winter roads in the province’s Far North connect 31 remote First Nation communities to a permanent highway or railway system. From around mid January until spring thaw (usually late March), these roads make it easier and less costly for people to travel and bring in supplies.

In 2011, the province will contribute $4.75M to construct and maintain the roads. The 2011-12 winter roads program will see the construction and operation of a 3,021 km winter road system.

Major benefits of winter roads include:

• Reduced cost of consumer goods, fuel and construction materials in the remote communities (truck vs. air).
• Providing families with economical access on a seasonal basis to primary health care and other services.
• Providing job creation and training opportunities for First Nation members involved in delivering the program.
• Enhancing seasonal access to remote areas of the province, thus helping remote communities promote their economies (access to mineral and forestry resources).
