Mines and Minerals Division: 

New Proposed Regulatory Changes Posted on Provincial Registries

The second group of new or amending regulations being put forward as part of Ontario’s work to modernize the Mining Act is now posted for public comment on Ontario’s Environmental Registry and Regulatory Registry. Ontario is proposing a number of regulatory changes including the revocation of one existing regulation.

Larder Lake Mining Division Spatial Data Now Available

New data more accurately showing the location of unpatented mining claims, leases and patents for the Larder Lake Mining Division is now available on CLAIMaps. Other divisions for which similar data can currently be viewed include the Kenora, Red Lake, Patricia, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and Southern Ontario mining divisions.

Building A System On Highly Accurate Spatial Data

Phase III of Modernizing the Mining Act will implement a new Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS), which will include the new provincial grid.  The grid will show the precise location of mining claims along with the location of newly updated spatial data. On occasion, other spatial data on our maps may not precisely correlate with actual survey evidence on the ground.

Ontario Legislature Passes Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act, 2017

Today at Queen’s Park, the Ontario Legislature passed the Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act, 2017 (Bill 39) on a vote after the close of third reading debate.  This legislation amends and modernizes both the Mining Act under the auspices of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aggregate Resources Act. Bill 39 only requires royal assent before becoming law.

Bill 39 Standing Committee Review Completed

The Standing Committee on Justice Policy has completed its review of the proposed Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act, 2016 (Bill 39).  Presentations on Schedule 2 of Bill 39, which deals with introduction of online mining claim registration and implementation of a new electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS), took place on March 2nd.

The Mining Act Modernization Phase 3 team will be at the 2017 annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to provide a number of venues and opportunities for mineral development clients to learn more about Schedule 2 of the proposed Aggregate Resources and Mining Modernization Act (Bill 39).

We Will Need Your Up-to-Date Mailing Address

Contingent upon legislation (Bill 39) being passed, all existing MNDM mineral exploration and development clients would be notified by mail with instructions to register their client profile in the new Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS). For that reason, you should ensure that we have your current mailing address on file.

Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division Spatial Data Now Available

New spatial data for the Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division is now available on CLAIMaps. Other divisions for which spatial data can currently be viewed include the Kenora, Red Lake, Patricia, and Southern Ontario Mining Divisions. Over the coming year, this new data will be made available for the other mining divisions as they are updated.

Bill 39 Committee Hearings Scheduled

The Standing Committee on Justice Policy intends to hold public hearings in Toronto on Thursday, February 23, 2017 and Thursday, March 2, 2017 to consider Bill 39, An Act to amend the Aggregate Resources Act and the Mining Act. Interested people who wish to be considered to make an oral presentation on Bill 39 on Thursday, February 23, 2017 should provide their contact name, mailing address, phone number, and email address to the Clerk of the Committee by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
