Claim Holder’s Guide to Conversion an Important New Tool for MLAS Users

One of Several Resources Available to Help You Prepare

The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines is pleased to be making a number of resources available to Ontario’s mineral development community to help it better prepare for implementation of the province’s third phase of modernizing the Mining Act. We’ve recently published a downloadable Claim Holder’s Guide to Conversion that provides a lot of information on Ontario’s upcoming online mining claim registration process and its new 24/7 electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS).

Who Should Read This Guide

The guide is intended for holders of mining claims in Ontario and other persons that currently manage mining claims. Users should be familiar with the province’s existing mineral exploration legislation, its regulatory framework, as well as the principles and practices governing the management and administration of mining lands in Ontario.

What’s in the Guide?

The guide provides an overview of the conversion process and timelines. It contains several visuals that illustrate how legacy claims will convert to either cell claims or boundary claims on April 10.

Readers will be able to better understand the potential impacts of conversion on their mining lands. The guide also provides information on:

  • new assessment work requirements, including assessment credits assignment limits and how to distribute credits from claim reserves to selected cell claims or boundary claims;
  • initial steps that holders should take to manage their mining claims in MLAS;
  • ongoing management of cell claims or boundary claims including matters such as abandonment, amalgamation, merging, and transfers.

New Information Sessions Planned

In addition to the new guide to help you prepare for conversion, the ministry is planning a series of information sessions for industry associations and Indigenous communities. Dates, time and location will be announced in an upcoming bulletin. You may also check our website for updates.

Online Tutorials

Online tutorials will also be available in MLAS after April 10 for clients to refer to for self help.
