GeoTours Northern Ontario

The Ontario Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada’s Geological Survey of Canada are pleased to announce the availability of the GeoTours Northern Ontario series, 17 self-guided tours highlighting geological sites of interest in or near various communities across Northern Ontario.

Rugged Canadian Shield landscapes and a rich mining heritage define much of Northern Ontario. The GeoTour series digs into the geological stories that explain how Northern Ontario’s well-known geological features came to be. We visit lakes and waterfalls, cliffs and canyons, mines and museums. Seven of the GeoTours highlight the Greater Sudbury area, where a meteorite impact 1.85 billion years ago resulted in rich nickel-copper ore deposits that have made the Greater Sudbury area world famous. Also explored are fascinating geological sites from Thunder Bay to Parry Sound and Killarney to Timmins. By telling the intriguing stories of Northern Ontario’s geology, we hope to inspire you to visit these places and learn about their remarkable landscapes, their astounding geological origins and vibrant mining history and economy.

The GeoTours can be obtained from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Mines and Minerals Geology Web page as a free download. Each GeoTour is available as a portable document format (PDF) file that can be printed out or saved on your tablet for easy reference when visiting the various sites.

Erratum

Preliminary Map P.3786, Precambrian Geology of Thorneloe and Price Townships (released on April 15, 2014), was published with an incorrect longitudinal measurement plotted at 1 corner of the map sheet: the northeastern extent is 48°21′50″N, 81°20′07″W (not 48°21′50″N, 84°20′07″W); all other measurements are correct.

This error has been corrected and a replacement map is available. If you purchased a copy of this map and wish to receive a replacement copy, please contact Publication Sales and a correct plot of this map will be sent to you free of charge.
