Groundwater Studies

Groundwater Resources Study 15
Three-Dimensional Modelling of Surficial Deposits in the Orangeville–Fergus Area of Southern Ontario; by A.K. Burt and J.E.P. Dodge. This digital release contains comprehensive information regarding the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution and character of surficial materials that form groundwater aquifers and aquitards within the 1550 km2 Orangeville–Fergus area of southwestern Ontario. The results of 43 new continuously cored boreholes, together with new geophysical surveying, surface sampling and analysis of legacy data sets, were the basis for the creation of a 3-D model which subdivides the Quaternary sediments into a regional-scale aquifer–aquitard sequence consisting of 16 hydrostratigraphic units. Undifferentiated Paleozoic bedrock forms the basal hydrostratigraphic unit across the map area. The report included in this release contains extensive appendixes which describe in detail the data sources, the methodology, the results of the field work and analyses, the products of the study and how to extract and use them. In addition, the release contains analytical data files (Microsoft® Access® database (.mdb) and Microsoft® Excel® (.xlsx)), ArcInfo® grids (ESRI® ArcInfo® raster data sets), Google Earth mapping service files (keyhole markup (.kml, .kmz) and portable network graphic (.png)), modelled surfaces (as comma-separated values (.csv)), a section viewer (Microsoft® Virtual Earth executable SectionViewer), a subsurface database (Microsoft® Access® database (.mdb)), graphic borehole logs as portable document format (.pdf) files, high resolution plates (.pdf) and movies (.avi). The data are available on 1 DVD. $25.00.

Miscellaneous Release—Data 337
Groundwater Hydrochemistry Data for Multi-Depth Well Sampling in the Early Silurian Carbonates of the Niagara Escarpment Cuesta; by E.H. Priebe and V.L. Lee. This digital data release comprises the hydrochemical data for 4 seasonally targeted groundwater sampling events that were conducted during 2011 and 2012. The sampling points consisted of a network of 12 multi-depth wells located in the Early Silurian carbonates of the Niagara Escarpment cuesta. Each multi-depth monitoring well contains 3 to 5 ports designed for both groundwater sampling and water level monitoring. This data release contains the analyses for 210 groundwater samples, for a total of 16 380 individual chemical measurements. The laboratory analyses include major ions, trace elements, bacteria and nutrients. Field analyses include alkalinity, temperature, pH, reduction–oxidation potential and electrical conductivity. For each of the 12 multi-depth wells and for the entire data set, the hydrochemical data are provided as 13 Microsoft® Excel® 2010 (.xlsx) files; accuracy and precision (quality control) plots (.tif files) for analytical parameters are also provided. A report, in portable document format (.pdf), contains a description of the study area, borehole logs, multi-depth well geometries, sampling methods, and analytical and quality control methods. The data are available on 1 CD. $20.00.
